As an assistant printer to William Hayter at Atelier 17 Paris, a post graduate student at the Royal Academy of Arts and a ATC (PG cert in HE equivalent) from Goldsmiths London University, led onto Ben sharing a print studio in Wapping with Chris Orr (former Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art). All came before Ben ever thought of photography. By the mid eighties Ben had exchanged his etching presses and paint brushes for Leica’s and Nikon F3’s. This has taken Ben on an extraordinary journey working all over the world working for: BBC, The Independent, Guardian, Observer, National Geographic, Associated Press, Reuters, Creative Camera and Commercially for Cable and Wireless, Abbot Meade Vickers and many others. Ben has had his work in just about every publication globally. Ben’s commercial agents are and have been TonyStone/Gettyimages, ImpactPhotos, Corbis, Brand X and Blendimages.com, that Ben is a founder member.
Ben is the Director of Er Productions Ltd that he founded in the nineties for Stills and film production.
Ben’s current practice has diversified into documentary and commercial film making and protracted high altitude walking projects in the Himalayas and around Britain and supplying Blendimages.com and Gettyimages.com with commercial medical imagery from his unique access over the last twenty three years in the renowned Medical Center, Houston, Texas:

Until the end of 2016 Ben was Course leader on MA Documentary Photography and Photojournalism, University of Westminster, London making it one of the most attended and successful Documentary Photographic MA’s in the country with a robust international reputation. Ben continues to lecture as a senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster on MA Documentary Photography and Photojournalism.
Ben has also been a visiting lecturer in Photographic UG and PG courses in the UK and a visiting Lecturer at JMI New Delhi, as well as an UG external examiner.
Ben has previously assisted his mentor Peter Norton in painting and etching summer workshops and latterly Directed and run summer camp music workshops in Cubertou France, with his partner Jane Orr, working with the late John Renbourn and very much alive Clive Carroll.
Ben’s work is in notable public collections in the UK; Victoria and Albert Museum and Public collections in the USA: MOMA Houston, Texas and various other public collections in the UK and abroad. Ben’s work has been exhibited widely; National Museum of Photography film and television and his photographs have been in mixed shows with Mona Hartoum, Andres Serrano, Helen Chadwick, Hannah Starkey, Clare Strand…
Ben’s other life is his family, classical guitar (currently working towards ARSM Diploma) and competitive tennis. Ben was a yoga instructor trained by Iyengar in Poona and is an enthusiastic raconteur and storyteller…
